Anchored on Victoria Quay in Fremantle, the WA Maritime Museum is a world-class showcase of Western Australia's deep connection with the Indian Ocean. Housed in a striking modern building alongside the historic 19th-century commissariat, the museum tells stories of exploration, trade, migration, and naval defence. The undisputed star is the full-size replica of the 17th-century Dutch ship Batavia, alongside the actual wreck of the submarine HMAS Ovens, which you can walk through. Interactive exhibits, maritime archaeology displays, and the America's Cup-winning yacht Australia II round out a compelling experience for history buffs and families alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Batavia Gallery: Stand beneath the towering reconstructed hull of the Batavia, a Dutch East India Company ship wrecked off the WA coast in 1629. The gallery tells the gripping story of mutiny and survival.
- HMAS Ovens: Climb inside a real Oberon-class submarine, exploring the cramped crew quarters and control room – a rare and immersive experience.
- Australia II: See the iconic yacht that broke the New York Yacht Club's 132-year hold on the America's Cup in 1983, complete with the revolutionary winged keel.
- Maritime Archaeology: Discover artefacts from historic shipwrecks along the treacherous WA coast, including Dutch and British vessels.
- Welcome Walls: A poignant outdoor installation listing names of migrants who arrived by sea in WA.
