Coogee Beach is a sun-drenched stretch of powdery sand and turquoise water just a short drive south of Fremantle, offering a laid-back escape from the city’s bustle. Unlike its famous Sydney namesake, this Coogee feels like a secret local haunt, with a long jetty, a protected swimming enclosure, and a lively foreshore dotted with picnic spots and playgrounds. It’s the kind of place where you can while away an afternoon swimming, snorkelling, or simply watching the sun melt into the Indian Ocean.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim in the Omeo Shipwreck – A short swim from the beach, the wreck of the Omeo sits in shallow water, making it an excellent snorkelling site where you can spot fish and explore the remains of this 19th-century steamer.
- Coogee Jetty & Floating Platform – The long jetty is perfect for a stroll, and the floating platform at the end is a favourite for jumping into the clear water. It’s also a prime spot for sunset views.
- Coogee Beach Foreshore – The grassy reserve behind the beach has barbecues, shaded tables, and a playground, ideal for families. The nearby Coogee Beach Café serves great coffee and fish and chips.
- Snorkel the Marine Reserve – The protected waters around the jetty and wreck are part of a marine reserve, teeming with marine life. Bring a mask and fins to see sea stars, rays, and colourful fish.
- Lake Coogee – A short walk inland leads to this peaceful lake, a haven for birdlife and a nice contrast to the ocean.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to soak up the beach, snorkel the wreck, and enjoy a meal. If you want to relax fully, plan a full day – bring a picnic and stay for sunset. The beach is also a great quick stop on a self-drive tour of Fremantle’s southern coast.
