Old Melbourne Gaol
Step into the dark and compelling world of the Old Melbourne Gaol, a bluestone prison that operated from 1842 to 1929 and now stands as one of Melbourne's most atmospheric historic attractions. This is where the infamous bushranger Ned Kelly spent his final days before execution – you can even see his death mask and the gallows where he was hanged. The gaol offers a chillingly immersive experience, with guided tours led by costumed actors who bring the stories of prisoners and wardens to life. It’s a must for history buffs and anyone fascinated by Australia’s convict and colonial past.
Highlights & What to See
- Ned Kelly’s Death Mask & Armour: See the plaster cast of his face taken after execution and the iconic homemade iron armour he wore at the Glenrowan siege.
- The Gallows & Hanging Tower: Stand where 133 prisoners were executed – the original trapdoor and rope remain, creating a sobering experience.
- Watch House & Cells: Explore the cramped, stone cells with original graffiti carved by inmates, and learn about daily prison life.
- Night Tours & Ghost Tours: For the brave, after-dark tours delve into the gaol’s paranormal reputation, complete with eerie stories and candlelight.
- City Watch House Experience: Adjacent to the gaol, this interactive exhibit lets you ‘book’ into a 1950s police lock-up for a taste of the justice system.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow around 1.5 to 2 hours for a self-guided visit, including time to watch the informative video and explore the cells. If you join a guided tour (highly recommended), budget 2.5 to 3 hours. Night tours run for about 75 minutes and are best booked in advance. The gaol is compact, so you can easily fit it into a morning or afternoon before heading to nearby attractions.
