Plunging 32 metres over a basalt cliff into a fern-lined gorge, Trentham Falls is one of Victoria's most impressive single-drop waterfalls. Located about 90 minutes northwest of Melbourne near the town of Trentham, this natural spectacle is at its thunderous best after rain, when the cascade roars with full force. The short, accessible walk to the viewing platform offers a postcard-perfect vantage point, making it a rewarding stop on any Great Dividing Range itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- The Viewing Platform: The main lookout provides a direct, unobstructed view of the falls plunging into the gorge. It's a short 200-metre walk from the carpark, suitable for most fitness levels.
- Falls Walk: A longer 2 km loop track descends through towering mountain ash and manna gum forests to the base of the falls, where you can feel the spray and explore the mossy boulders.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, wallabies, and echidnas in the surrounding Wombat State Forest.
- Seasonal Beauty: Spring brings wildflowers and lush greenery; autumn paints the foliage gold; winter sees the falls at their most powerful.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes at the main viewing platform. If you're keen to do the Falls Walk and soak up the forest atmosphere, allow 1–1.5 hours. Combine with a morning exploring Trentham's cafes and antique shops, or a picnic at the nearby Trentham Memorial Park for a half-day outing.
