Port Fairy is a historic fishing port on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, where bluestone cottages line the Moyne River and wild surf crashes against volcanic headlands. This is a place for long walks on empty beaches, fresh seafood straight off the boat, and a palpable sense of 19th-century seafaring history.
Highlights & What to See
- Griffiths Island – A short causeway leads to this windswept nature reserve, home to a large colony of short-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) and a lighthouse with panoramic ocean views.
- Moyne River & Wharf Area – Watch fishing boats unload their catch, then grab fish and chips from a waterfront takeaway. The historic wharf precinct buzzes with working boats and seafood co-ops.
- Port Fairy History Centre & Lighthouse – Housed in the former lighthouse keeper's cottage, this small museum tells the story of the port's whaling and shipping past.
- East Beach & South Beach – Sweeping, wild beaches ideal for bracing walks, birdwatching, and spotting southern right whales (June–September).
- Historic Bluestone Buildings – Stroll through town to see well-preserved 1850s bluestone churches, cottages, and the Port Fairy Hotel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Port Fairy rewards a relaxed overnight stay. Arrive by mid-afternoon, wander the wharf and Griffiths Island at sunset, then enjoy a seafood dinner. The next morning, explore the beaches and history centre before heading off. If you're pressed for time, a half-day (3–4 hours) is enough for a quick taste, but you'll wish you'd stayed longer.
