Tasman National Park
On the wild, wind-sculpted Tasman Peninsula, Tasman National Park is a dramatic showcase of sea cliffs, dolerite pillars, and turquoise coves. The roar of the Southern Ocean echoes against 300-metre-high rock faces, while the famous Tessellated Pavement and Tasman Arch reveal nature's artistry. This is a place for coastal walks, wildlife spotting (seals, seabirds, and occasionally whales), and sheer awe.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Capes Track: A world-class, multi-day walk offering jaw-dropping views of Cape Hauy, Cape Pillar, and Cape Raoul. Book well in advance.
- Tessellated Pavement: A natural rock platform cracked into geometric blocks, best seen at low tide.
- Tasman Arch & Devil's Kitchen: Two short, spectacular lookouts over sea caves and blowholes carved by the ocean.
- Remarkable Cave: A sea cave with a viewing platform that captures the raw power of the swell.
- Waterfall Bay & Watsons Track: An easy walk with dramatic cliff views, finishing at a waterfall cascading onto the beach.
- Port Arthur Historic Site: Just outside the park, this UNESCO-listed penal settlement offers a sobering glimpse into convict history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to drive the park's main sights and do a couple of short walks. If you plan to hike the Three Capes Track, allow 3β4 days for the full guided or independent experience. A half-day is enough to hit the key natural attractions like Tasman Arch and the Tessellated Pavement, but you'll want longer to truly absorb the coastal drama and perhaps join a wildlife cruise.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Arthur: A 10-minute drive from the park entrance, this historic site pairs perfectly with the natural wonders.

- Bruny Island: Accessible via ferry from Kettering (south of Hobart), offering gourmet produce and dramatic coastline.
- Freycinet National Park: About 2.5 hours north, famous for Wineglass Bay and granite peaks β a great add-on for a longer Tassie road trip.
