St Helens is a laid-back coastal town on Tasmania's east coast, the gateway to the Bay of Fires. Its deep-blue waters, white-sand beaches, and laid-back fishing-vibe make it a perfect base for exploring one of Australia's most stunning coastlines. The town itself has a working harbour, good seafood spots, and a friendly local feel.
Highlights & What to See
- Bay of Fires Conservation Area – Drive north to Binalong Bay for dazzling white beaches, turquoise water, and the famous orange-lichen-covered granite boulders. The coastal walk between Binalong Bay and Cosy Corner is a must.
- St Helens Point Conservation Area – A short drive south leads to pristine beaches and the St Helens Point walking track, with coastal heath and views over Georges Bay.
- Fishing and Seafood – St Helens is Tasmania's rock lobster capital. Grab fresh fish and chips from the harbour or try a seafood platter at a local café.
- Wineglass Bay & Freycinet National Park – About an hour's drive south, this iconic park offers the classic Wineglass Bay lookout walk and kayaking in the bay.
- Binalong Bay – The southern gateway to the Bay of Fires, with calm swimming beaches and a relaxed holiday vibe.
Suggested Time to Spend
Base yourself in St Helens for 2–3 days to explore the Bay of Fires properly. Spend one day driving the coastal route from Binalong Bay north to Eddystone Point, stopping for walks and swims. Use another day for a trip to Freycinet National Park or to go fishing. If you're tight on time, a day trip from Launceston is possible but rushed – you'll want to linger.
