Perched on the serene banks of the Tamar River, Beauty Point is a quiet hamlet that feels a world away from Tasmania's tourist trail. Its name is no exaggeration — the water views, rolling green hills, and unhurried pace make it a genuine beauty spot. For international travellers, it offers a slice of authentic Tasmanian life, with a strong maritime heritage and a surprising food scene that rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Seahorse World — a working seahorse farm and aquarium that reveals the quirky side of Tasmanian aquaculture. The guided tour is surprisingly fascinating, and you can even see baby seahorses.
- Platypus House — just next door, this is one of the best places in Australia to see platypuses and echidnas up close. The educational displays are world-class, and the animals are genuinely endearing.
- Beauty Point Jetty — a lovely spot for a stroll at sunset, with fishing boats bobbing and views across the Tamar River. Keep an eye out for resident seals and seabirds.
- Tamar River Cruises — a gentle boat trip from the jetty offers a different perspective on the region's natural beauty, with knowledgeable commentary on local history and wildlife.
- Local Produce & Cafés — the small township has a handful of cafés and a bakery where you can grab excellent coffee, fresh seafood, and artisan produce. Don't miss the scallop pies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Beauty Point is a half-day detour at most. Allocate about two hours to visit Seahorse World and Platypus House (they're side by side), then another hour to explore the jetty and grab a bite. It works perfectly as a morning or afternoon stop en route between Launceston (45 minutes south) and the Tamar Valley wine region. You could easily combine it with a winery lunch and still have time for an afternoon cruise.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Launceston — Tasmania's second city, with its superb Cataract Gorge, vibrant food scene, and historic architecture, is just a 45-minute drive south.
- Tamar Valley Wine Route — a scenic drive through rolling vineyards, with cellar doors offering cool-climate wines, especially sparkling and pinot noir. Many have restaurants with river views.
- Low Head — a historic coastal village at the mouth of the Tamar, known for its lighthouse, penguin tours, and lovely beaches. Only 15 minutes north.
- Bridport — a relaxed seaside town with a beautiful beach and a famous golf course, about 30 minutes east of Beauty Point.
- Wineglass Bay — while it's a longer drive (about 2.5 hours east), Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park is an iconic Tasmanian destination worth a dedicated trip. Combine it with a stay in the Freycinet region for a longer itinerary.
