Just a 90-minute drive west of Cairns, Innot Hot Springs is a blissful natural soak tucked into the tropical savannah. This isn’t a manicured spa — it’s a series of hot-water pools bubbling up along the banks of the North Johnstone River, where locals and savvy travellers come to ease tired muscles in mineral-rich waters. The setting is raw and peaceful, with palms and paperbarks overhead, and the only soundtrack is the river and birdlife. It’s the perfect detour on a drive to the Atherton Tablelands or an offbeat day trip from Cairns.
Highlights & What to See
- Natural thermal pools — Wade into the warm, mineral-laden water (around 40°C) that seeps up through the riverbed; the main pool is easily accessible and great for a long soak.
- Rustic hot tubs — A few man-made concrete pools have been built beside the river, offering a deeper, hotter dip with a view of the surrounding bush.
- North Johnstone River — After your soak, cool off in the clear, cool river water, or simply relax on the grassy banks with a picnic.
- Birdwatching and wildlife — Keep an eye out for azure kingfishers, rainbow bee-eaters, and the occasional platypus in the river at dawn or dusk.
- Nearby Innot Hot Springs township — A tiny settlement with a historic pub (the Innot Hot Springs Hotel) where you can grab a cold drink and hear local yarns.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least two hours to fully enjoy the soak and a wander along the riverbank. If you’re combining it with a day exploring the Atherton Tablelands, a morning or afternoon stop is ideal — the springs are a wonderful way to break up a self-drive loop from Cairns. For a truly relaxing experience, arrive early on a weekday to have the pools almost to yourself.
