Just 27 kilometres offshore from Cairns, Green Island is a pristine coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef that packs a surprising amount of beauty into its tiny 12-hectare footprint. Fringed by white-sand beaches and ringed with living coral, this national park island offers a perfect day-trip escape where you can snorkel straight off the beach, explore the rainforest interior, and soak up classic tropical-island vibes without committing to a liveaboard.
Highlights & What to See
- Snorkelling & Glass-Bottom Boat Tours – The fringing reef is teeming with colourful fish, clams and corals; even beginners can wade in from the beach. Glass-bottom boats and semi-submersibles let you see marine life without getting wet.
- Rainforest Walk – A short boardwalk loops through the island’s centre, winding among ancient fig trees, pandanus palms and birdlife. Keep an eye out for the striking emerald dove.
- Beach Time – The main beach on the western side is calm and swimmable, with soft white sand perfect for lazing between snorkels.
- Marine Life Encounters – Green and loggerhead turtles are frequently spotted in the shallows, and between June and September migrating humpback whales pass through the channel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come on a day trip from Cairns, which gives you a solid four to six hours on the island – plenty of time for a morning snorkel, a rainforest stroll, lunch at the resort café and another dip before the afternoon ferry. If you want to linger, the island’s resort offers overnight stays, letting you experience the reef at dawn and dusk when the crowds thin out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Cairns Esplanade – Back in Cairns, the lagoon and boardwalk are ideal for a sunset swim or a casual dinner after your island adventure.
