Great Basalt Wall

Rising from the savannah like a dark, jagged spine, the Great Basalt Wall is one of Queensland’s most underrated natural wonders. This ancient lava flow, stretching over 100 km, created a labyrinth of rugged rock formations, caves, and vine-choked crevices that feel a world away from the coastal bustle of Cairns. For travellers craving raw geology and solitude, this is a place where you can literally walk on the crust of an extinct volcano.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves at Undara Volcanic National Park, 3.5 hours’ drive southwest of Cairns. Dedicate a full day: take a morning lava-tube tour, then spend the afternoon on the Wall Walk and exploring the interpretive centre. If you’re camping or staying at the Undara Lodge, an overnight stay lets you soak up the outback sunset and dark skies. It’s a perfect detour on a Savannah Way road trip.
