Stretching 35 kilometres through the Clare Valley, the Riesling Trail is one of South Australia's most beloved rail-trails, offering a flat, sealed path that winds through vineyards, historic towns and golden farmland. Named for the region's signature grape, this former railway corridor is perfect for cycling, walking or even a gentle jog, with cellar doors, cafes and picnic spots never far away. The trail connects the towns of Clare and Auburn, passing through Sevenhill, Watervale and Leasingham, each with its own character and wine offerings. Whether you're a wine enthusiast, a nature lover or simply seeking a relaxed day out, the Riesling Trail delivers a quintessential Clare Valley experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day to cycle the entire trail at a leisurely pace, stopping at wineries and towns along the way. Most cyclists complete the 35-kilometre route in 3–4 hours of riding, but factoring in tastings and lunch easily stretches it to 5–7 hours. If you're walking, consider tackling it in two days, overnighting in Clare or Auburn. Many visitors choose to cycle one direction and arrange a shuttle back, or simply explore a shorter section – the 12-kilometre stretch between Clare and Watervale is particularly scenic and dotted with cellar doors.
