Parachilna Gorge is a rugged, red-rock cleft in the Flinders Ranges that feels like a secret hideaway. The dirt road snakes between towering cliffs of ancient quartzite, with ghost gums clinging to the rock faces and the scent of dry earth and eucalyptus in the air. This is the Outback at its most intimate — a place where you can camp under a canopy of stars, spot yellow-footed rock-wallabies at dusk, and soak up the raw beauty of the Australian interior without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Parachilna Gorge Scenic Drive — A 23 km unsealed road that winds from the bitumen at Parachilna through to the historic town of Blinman. Allow an hour each way, stopping to photograph the dramatic rock formations and to scan for wallabies and wedge-tailed eagles.
- Angorichina Village — A former tuberculosis sanatorium turned quirky tourist village, with a café, caravan park, and a short heritage walk among the old stone buildings. It’s a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century remote health care.
- Blinman — Australia’s highest town (at 612 m) and a former copper-mining hub. Visit the Blinman Mine Museum, grab a pie at the historic pub, and explore the underground mine tour.
- Glass Gorge — A side gorge just north of Parachilna Gorge, known for its sparkling quartzite scree and excellent birdwatching. A short walk leads to a peaceful waterhole.
- Prairie Hotel, Parachilna — An iconic outback pub famous for its ‘Feral Mixed Grill’ (kangaroo, camel, emu, and goat). Even if you don’t eat, the sunset views over the ranges from the verandah are worth the stop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend a full day exploring Parachilna Gorge as a loop from the town of Parachilna. Drive the gorge road in the morning, stop for lunch at Blinman or the Prairie Hotel, then return via the same route or continue south through the Flinders Ranges. If you’re camping, overnight at Angorichina Village or one of the free campsites along the gorge — the starry skies are phenomenal. For a more relaxed pace, base yourself for two nights and also explore the nearby Heysen Range and Bunyeroo Gorge.
