Parachilna Gorge is a rugged, red-rock cleft in the Flinders Ranges that feels like a secret hideaway. The dirt road snakes between towering cliffs of ancient quartzite, with ghost gums clinging to the rock faces and the scent of dry earth and eucalyptus in the air. This is the Outback at its most intimate — a place where you can camp under a canopy of stars, spot yellow-footed rock-wallabies at dusk, and soak up the raw beauty of the Australian interior without the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers spend a full day exploring Parachilna Gorge as a loop from the town of Parachilna. Drive the gorge road in the morning, stop for lunch at Blinman or the Prairie Hotel, then return via the same route or continue south through the Flinders Ranges. If you’re camping, overnight at Angorichina Village or one of the free campsites along the gorge — the starry skies are phenomenal. For a more relaxed pace, base yourself for two nights and also explore the nearby Heysen Range and Bunyeroo Gorge.
