Winding through the heart of South Australia's Clare Valley, the Riesling Trail is a 35-kilometre rail-trail that offers one of the most delightful cycling and walking experiences in the country. This sealed, mostly flat path links historic villages and vineyards, providing a sensory journey through rolling hills, eucalypt forests, and some of Australia's finest wine country. The trail is named for the region's signature grape, and you'll pass cellar doors where you can taste world-class rieslings straight from the source. With gentle gradients and a convivial atmosphere, it's perfect for a leisurely day out or a multi-day self-drive itinerary combining wine, food, and outdoor adventure.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most cyclists take 3–4 hours to ride the full 35 km from Clare to Auburn (or vice versa), allowing for wine stops and a leisurely lunch. If you prefer a half-day, the 16 km section from Clare to Watervale is especially scenic and dotted with cellar doors. For a more immersive experience, plan a full day with multiple tastings and a picnic, or split the trail over two days with an overnight stay in Clare or Auburn. Walkers can tackle shorter 5–10 km segments and still enjoy the highlights.
