Daly Waters

Daly Waters is a tiny, sun-baked outpost in the Northern Territory that punches well above its weight in character and history. This former telegraph station and droving stopover is now famous for its eccentric pub, a ramshackle collection of memorabilia that draws travellers on the Stuart Highway. It's the kind of place where you pull in for a cold beer and end up swapping stories with grey nomads, grey-headed bus drivers, and backpackers under a ceiling covered in bras, banknotes, and business cards. The surrounding landscape is classic red-centre: spinifex, termite mounds, and a big sky that turns electric at sunset.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Daly Waters is a classic pit stop rather than a base. Most travellers spend one night – arrive mid-afternoon to soak up the pub atmosphere, enjoy dinner, then hit the road next morning. If you're stretching a self-drive itinerary, an overnight stay here breaks the long haul between Katherine and Tennant Creek perfectly. You could also just stop for a couple of hours for lunch and a wander, but the pub's charm really shines after dark.
