Barkly Homestead is a legendary outback roadhouse and rest stop on the Barkly Highway, roughly halfway between Tennant Creek and the Queensland border. It’s a classic Aussie roadhouse—think cold beer, hearty meals, and a genuine welcome from locals and travellers alike. Surrounded by red dirt, spinifex, and endless horizons, it’s less a destination and more a quintessential outback experience: a place to refuel, stretch your legs, and swap yarns with fellow adventurers. The homestead’s history as a cattle station adds a layer of authentic outback character.
Highlights & What to See
- Outback Roadhouse Vibe: Soak up the atmosphere at the historic pub, where walls are covered with memorabilia and the beer is ice-cold. It’s a perfect spot to chat with locals and travellers.
- Barkly Homestead Station: Explore the working cattle station—you can take a self-guided walk to see the old homestead ruins and learn about life on the land.
- Stargazing: With virtually zero light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Grab a blanket and lie back to spot the Milky Way and shooting stars.
- Walk the Red Dirt: Take a short stroll along the Barkly Highway edge to feel the vastness of the Barkly Tablelands—the red earth and spinifex are iconic.
- Devils Marbles (Karlu Karlu): About 100 km west, these giant granite boulders are a must-see. Visit at sunset when they glow orange and red.
