Arltunga, once the heart of Central Australia's gold rush, is now a hauntingly beautiful ghost town set amid the ochre-red MacDonnell Ranges. About 110 kilometres east of Alice Springs, this historic reserve offers a raw, windswept glimpse into the harsh lives of miners who flocked here in the 1880s. It's a must for history buffs and anyone wanting to step off the beaten track.
Highlights & What to See
- Arltunga Historical Reserve – Explore the well-preserved stone buildings, including the police station, battery and crushing works, and the old gaol. The visitor centre provides context on the town's boom-and-bust story.
- Government Battery & Stamp Mill – See the giant metal stamps that crushed ore, and imagine the deafening noise that once filled this valley.
- Whites Gap Walking Trail – A short but steep climb offering panoramic views over the reserve and the surrounding ranges.
- Fossicking – Try your luck at the designated fossicking area (you'll need a permit from the visitor centre). It's a fun, hands-on way to connect with the gold rush era.
- MacDonnell Ranges scenery – Even the drive in is spectacular, with the West MacDonnell Ranges glowing in the changing light.
