Ubirr is one of the most famous rock art sites in Kakadu National Park, home to an extraordinary gallery of ancient Aboriginal paintings and a spectacular lookout over the Nadab floodplain. Reached via a short but steep rock climb, the site offers a profound connection to Indigenous culture and breathtaking outback vistas, especially at sunset.
Highlights & What to See
- Rock Art Galleries: Wander through the main gallery where you'll see vivid depictions of ancestral beings, including the Rainbow Serpent and Mimi spirits, as well as paintings of animals like kangaroos, fish, and turtles, some dating back thousands of years.
- Ubirr Lookout: A moderate 250-metre climb over boulders rewards you with panoramic views of the floodplain and the East Alligator River. It's a classic sunset spot, with the escarpment glowing amber as the light fades.
- Aboriginal Cultural Interpretation: Join a ranger-led talk (seasonal) to understand the stories behind the art and the living culture of the Bininj/Mungguy people. Self-guided boards also provide excellent context.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for wallabies, dingoes, and a rich variety of birdlife along the floodplain, especially during the dry season when animals congregate near waterholes.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the art galleries and make the climb to the lookout. If you're visiting for sunset, plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before sundown to secure a spot and watch the colours change over the floodplain. Combine Ubirr with a morning visit to the nearby Bowali Visitor Centre or an afternoon at the East Alligator River for a full day in the northern part of Kakadu.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bowali Visitor Centre: Just a short drive south, this cultural centre offers exhibits on Kakadu's environment and Aboriginal culture, plus a café and walking trails.
- East Alligator River: Launch a boat tour or take the Cahills Crossing boardwalk to spot saltwater crocodiles and prolific birdlife.
- Nourlangie Rock: Another major rock art site in Kakadu, with its own stunning galleries and a shorter, easier walk than Ubirr.
- Yellow Water Billabong: Famous for its sunrise and sunset cruises through wetlands teeming with wildlife, located about 90 minutes south of Ubirr.
- Jabiru Township: The main service centre in Kakadu, offering accommodation, fuel, and supplies, as well as the excellent Marrawuddi Gallery.
