Turkey Creek is a tiny, off-the-beaten-path settlement in the Northern Territory, best known as the gateway to the mesmerising Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater. This is rugged, remote outback country where the red dirt roads stretch to the horizon and the night sky blazes with stars. For travellers on the Lasseter Highway, Turkey Creek offers a genuine taste of the Australian interior — raw, quiet, and unforgettable.
Highlights & What to See
- Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater – One of the world's best-preserved impact craters, nearly 900m across. Walk the rim for breathtaking views over the vast desert, or scramble down to the crater floor (allow 2–3 hours). The drive in is an adventure in itself — 145km of unsealed road from the highway.
- Red Desert Landscape – The surrounding spinifex plains and red sand dunes are quintessential outback scenery. Stop anywhere along the road for a photo that captures the immense scale of the Centre.
- Stargazing – With zero light pollution, Turkey Creek offers phenomenal night skies. Bring a blanket and lie back to watch the Milky Way arch overhead.
- Local Flora & Fauna – Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, dingoes, and wildflowers after rain. The hardy desert plants — like the striking Sturt's desert pea — add splashes of colour.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves at the nearby Halls Creek (about 150km north) and tackle Turkey Creek as a day trip. To properly experience Wolfe Creek Crater and soak in the outback atmosphere, dedicate a full day — leave early, carry plenty of water and fuel, and aim to be back before sunset. If you're camping, one night at the crater campground is a magical option.
