Mary River, a wild and remote floodplain system in the Northern Territory, offers a raw outback experience far from the crowds. This is croc country at its finest — expect prolific birdlife, billabongs teeming with barramundi, and a palpable sense of the ancient landscape. It’s a must for self-drivers seeking an authentic Top End adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Mary River National Park – Explore a network of wetlands, paperbark forests and sandstone escarpments. The Couzens Lookout gives sweeping views over the floodplain.
- Corroboree Billabong – A premier spot for crocodile spotting and birdwatching. Take a guided cruise or paddle a canoe silently through the lily pads.
- Shady Camp – Famous for barramundi fishing; the barrage walkway is a great place to spot saltwater crocs lurking below.
- Wildlife encounters – Keep an eye out for jabirus, brolgas, whistling kites and, of course, the resident estuarine crocodiles. Dawn and dusk are prime times.
- Four-wheel driving – The park has challenging 4WD tracks that lead to remote camping spots and hidden billabongs. A high-clearance vehicle is essential in the wet season.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to explore the national park and its key billabongs. If you’re keen on fishing or want to take a cruise, two days is ideal — camp overnight at one of the basic campgrounds to experience the nocturnal sounds of the bush. The dry season (May–October) offers the best access and wildlife viewing.
