Lake Torrens is a vast, ephemeral salt lake in South Australia, not the Northern Territory. Despite the slug, it lies about 340 km north of Port Augusta, near the Flinders Ranges. This immense, usually dry salt pan stretches over 240 km and is a striking natural feature best seen from the air or during rare flooding events when it becomes a haven for waterbirds. It's a remote, starkly beautiful place that rewards adventurous travelers with a sense of isolation and raw landscape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate a half-day to explore the lake's accessible edges from the nearest town, Leigh Creek (about 50 km east). If you're on a self-drive itinerary through the Flinders Ranges, a detour to the lake's lookout points takes 2–3 hours. For photographers and solitude seekers, consider a full day to drive the loop tracks and absorb the silence.
