Yalata is a remote Aboriginal community on the far west coast of South Australia, situated along the Eyre Highway. It serves as a gateway to the stunning Nullarbor Plain and offers a unique insight into Indigenous culture and the stark, beautiful landscape of the region. The community is known for its art centre and its proximity to the Head of the Bight, where you can witness the annual whale migration.
Highlights & What to See
- Yalata Art Centre: Visit the local art centre to see and purchase authentic Aboriginal art, including paintings and artefacts created by the community's artists.
- Head of the Bight: During winter (June to October), this is one of the best places in Australia to see southern right whales up close from the cliff-top viewing platforms.
- Nullarbor Roadhouse: A classic outback pit stop for supplies, a meal, and a photo with the famous sign marking the start of the Nullarbor crossing.
- Koonalda Cave: A significant archaeological site with ancient Aboriginal rock art, located on the Nullarbor Plain (access may require permission).

Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through Yalata on a self-drive crossing of the Nullarbor. Allocate at least two to three hours to explore the art centre and stretch your legs. If you plan to whale-watch at Head of the Bight, set aside half a day during the season. A brief overnight stop is ideal to break up the long drive and enjoy the outback sunset.
