Moomba

Moomba is a remote natural gas and oil field in the far north of South Australia, near the Northern Territory border. For travellers, it's less a destination and more a fascinating stop on the Lasseter Highway, offering a glimpse into Australia's vast energy industry against a backdrop of stark outback scenery. The name 'Moomba' means 'let's get together' in the local Aboriginal language, and the site is a hub for workers, but passing tourists can appreciate the sheer scale of the operation and the isolation of the landscape.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Moomba is a brief stop rather than a day trip. Allow 15–30 minutes to stretch your legs, take photos, and appreciate the isolation. Most travellers pass through en route between Coober Pedy and Uluru, so it's best treated as a quick roadside curiosity. If you're interested in industrial history, you might linger a little longer, but there are no facilities for overnight stays.
