Edith Falls (Leliyn) is a stunning series of cascading waterfalls and rock pools within the Nitmiluk National Park, just a short detour off the Stuart Highway between Katherine and Kakadu National Park. Unlike the more famous Katherine Gorge, Edith Falls offers a more intimate and accessible swimming experience, with crystal-clear water tumbling over sandstone escarpments into deep, cool plunge pools. The sound of rushing water and the sight of pandanus palms framing the pools make this a quintessential Top End oasis.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper and Lower Pools: The main swimming hole—the lower pool—is a large, deep pool fed by a curtain of water from the upper falls. A short, 1.6 km return walk leads to the upper pool, which is smaller but equally inviting, with a sandy beach and a natural waterslide.
- Sweetwater Pool: For a more secluded swim, follow the 4 km return Sweetwater Trail to a quiet pool surrounded by monsoon forest. It’s a great spot for birdwatching and escaping the crowds.
- Leliyn Trail: This 2.6 km loop walk offers panoramic views of the escarpment and the falls from above, passing through woodlands rich with wildlife. Early morning or late afternoon walks are best for spotting wallabies and birdlife.
- Picnic and Camping Facilities: The falls have a grassy picnic area with barbecues, tables, and a campground (book ahead in dry season). It’s a perfect spot for a relaxed lunch after a swim.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–4 hours at Edith Falls, which allows time for a swim in the lower pool, a short walk to the upper pool or Sweetwater, and a picnic. If you’re camping or want to explore all trails, plan for a half-day. The falls are best visited in the dry season (May–October) when the water is clear and the swimming is safe; in the wet season, the flow is powerful but swimming may be closed due to crocodile risk.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park): Just 30 km south, the gorge offers boat cruises, canoe hire, and longer hikes. Combine Edith Falls with a morning at the gorge for a full day of water-based adventure.
- Katherine Town: The nearest service centre, with supermarkets, fuel, and accommodation options. The Katherine Hot Springs are a relaxing end to a day of exploring.
- Leliyn (Edith Falls) to Katherine Gorge Walk: Experienced hikers can tackle the 8.6 km one-way trail connecting the two areas, offering dramatic escarpment views and remote swimming holes.
- Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park: About 30 km south of Katherine, these limestone caves feature guided tours showcasing stalactites, stalagmites, and unique cave-dwelling wildlife.
