Elliott is a tiny, sun-baked highway settlement in the Northern Territory’s remote Barkly Tableland, roughly 650 km south of Darwin. It’s the quintessential outback pit stop – a place where the Stuart Highway cuts through vast, red-earth plains and the only sound is the wind and the occasional road train. For travellers on the long haul between Darwin and Alice Springs, Elliott offers a no-frills glimpse of life in the deep interior, with a handful of services and a palpable sense of isolation.
Highlights & What to See
- Longreach Waterhole – A permanent, spring-fed billabong just 8 km east of town. It’s a lifesaver for birdwatchers and a shady spot for a picnic; look for brolgas, whistling kites and corellas gathering at dusk.
- Elliott Memorial – A roadside monument commemorating the town’s namesake, a surveyor who died nearby in the 1870s. It’s a quick stop but gives a sense of the region’s tough pioneering history.
- Stuart Highway driving experience – The real attraction here is the journey itself. The endless horizon, the shifting colours of spinifex and Mitchell grass, and the sheer emptiness are what make Elliott memorable.
- Outback pub culture – Drop into the Elliott Hotel for a cold beer and yarn with locals. It’s a classic outback pub with a pool table and a verandah – perfect for stretching your legs.
Suggested Time to Spend
Elliott is a brief stopover, not a destination. Most travellers pause for 30 minutes to an hour to refuel, grab a meal and visit Longreach Waterhole. If you’re breaking the long drive, an overnight stay is feasible – there’s a caravan park and a motel – but you’ll have covered the main sights in a couple of hours. Plan to arrive in the late afternoon to enjoy the waterhole’s birdlife at sunset before heading off again.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Daly Waters – 130 km north, famous for its historic pub with a ceiling plastered in banknotes, postcards and bras. A quirky, must-stop detour.
- Newcastle Waters – 70 km south, a ghost town with a cluster of heritage-listed drovers’ cottages and a fascinating outback museum.
- Dunmarra – 90 km north, a roadhouse with a small reptile display and a good café – another practical break.
- Larrimah – 110 km north, a tiny town with a giant pink statue of a big boab and a famous disappearing-person mystery.
- Mindil Beach – A world away in Darwin, but if you’re heading north, this sunset market spot is a brilliant contrast to Elliott’s arid stillness.
