Wilpena Pound is a spectacular natural amphitheatre in the heart of the Flinders Ranges, a massive crater-like formation ringed by rugged quartzite peaks. This ancient landscape, sacred to the Adnyamathanha people, offers some of South Australia's most dramatic hiking, wildlife encounters, and outback scenery. The sheer scale and serenity of the Pound—visible from the air or from atop its ridges—makes it a must-see for travellers exploring the Red Centre or the outback.
Highlights & What to See
- St Mary Peak – The highest point in the Flinders Ranges; a challenging full-day hike rewards with panoramic views over the Pound and beyond.
- Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges – Scenic drives through ancient geological formations, with chances to spot yellow-footed rock-wallabies and red kangaroos.
- Wilpena Pound Resort – The only accommodation inside the national park; offers guided cultural tours with Adnyamathanha elders, scenic flights over the Pound, and excellent bushwalking access.
- Wangara Lookout – A short walk to a viewpoint that captures the entire Pound in one sweeping vista, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.
- Sacred Canyon – A gentle walk into a narrow gorge featuring ancient Aboriginal rock art and engravings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two full days to experience the highlights. Day one: arrive, take a scenic flight (30 minutes) to grasp the scale, then do the Wangara Lookout walk and a drive through Brachina Gorge. Day two: tackle the St Mary Peak hike (allow 7–9 hours) or opt for a shorter walk like the Hills Homestead Walk. If you have a third day, explore Bunyeroo Gorge and the Sacred Canyon. The best seasons are autumn and spring, when temperatures are mild and wildflowers bloom.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
