Rising like a red backbone from the arid plains of South Australia, the Flinders Ranges are one of the continent’s most dramatic and ancient landscapes. This rugged range, stretching over 400 kilometres, is a canvas of ochre gorges, fossil-rich ridges, and vast salt lakes. It’s a place where you can walk in the footsteps of the Adnyamathanha people, spot yellow-footed rock-wallabies, and soak in the raw beauty of the outback. Whether you’re a geology buff, a hiker, or simply seeking wide-open spaces, the Flinders Ranges deliver an unforgettable, soul-stirring experience.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give yourself at least three to four days to explore the Flinders Ranges properly. This allows time for a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound, a full day driving the gorges, and a sunrise hike. If you’re keen on longer walks or visiting Lake Eyre, extend to a week. The best visiting months are April to October, when temperatures are milder; summer can be scorching. Plan to base yourself in the tiny town of Hawker or at Wilpena Pound Resort, and always carry plenty of water and fuel.
