Emily and Jessie Gaps Nature Park is a striking pocket of the MacDonnell Ranges just 15 minutes' drive east of Alice Springs. These two parallel gorges—Emily Gap (Akeyulerre) and Jessie Gap—are sacred to the Arrernte people and hold deep cultural significance. The vivid red cliffs, cool rock pools, and ancient ghost gums create a serene landscape perfect for a short walk, a picnic, or a moment of quiet reflection. It's an easy, rewarding addition to any Alice Springs itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Emily Gap (Akeyulerre): The main attraction—a narrow chasm with a permanent waterhole and ochre-coloured walls. Look for Aboriginal rock art and the 'caterpillar dreaming' patterns on the rocks.
- Jessie Gap: A wider, more open gorge with a short walking trail that offers panoramic views of the West MacDonnell Ranges. It's a great spot for birdwatching and sunset photography.
- Walking trails: A 1.5km loop at Emily Gap leads past the waterhole and through river red gums; Jessie Gap has a 300m walk to a lookout. Both are easy and family-friendly.
- Wildlife spotting: Black-footed rock-wallabies often appear at dusk, and birdlife includes zebra finches and honeyeaters.
- Cultural significance: The site is part of the Yeperenye (caterpillar) dreaming story—take time to read the interpretive signs and respect the sacred nature of the area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to explore both gaps at a leisurely pace. Visit either early morning or late afternoon for the best light on the cliffs and to avoid midday heat. The park is small but photogenic, so it works well as a quick stop on the way to or from the East MacDonnell Ranges, or as a half-day outing combined with a picnic.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
