Xindian
Xindian, a laid-back district at the southern edge of Taipei, is where the city exhales. The turquoise Bitan River, flanked by lush hills, creates a natural playground for kayaking, cycling, and riverside strolls. Its night market and tea houses offer a taste of local life without the crowds of central Taipei.
Highlights & What to See
- Bitan Scenic Area – The star attraction: a serene lake formed by the Xindian River, perfect for paddleboat rides, lakeside walks, and sunset views from the suspension bridge.
- Xindian Night Market – Smaller and more authentic than Shilin, this market serves up local street food like stinky tofu, grilled squid, and bubble tea in a bustling alley setting.
- Xindian Old Street – A historic lane lined with traditional shops selling tea, dried goods, and snacks; a glimpse into the area’s trading past.
- Meihe Riverside Bike Path – A scenic 5-km cycle route along the river, ideal for a leisurely ride with mountain views.
- Bitan Suspension Bridge – An iconic bridge connecting the two sides of the river, offering photo-worthy panoramas, especially at night when lit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to explore the Bitan area, enjoy a boat ride, and sample night market snacks. For a more relaxed pace, combine with a hike in nearby hills or a tea-tasting session at a riverside café, allowing a full day. Xindian works well as a half-day escape from Taipei, easily paired with a visit to Wulai (for hot springs) or the Maokong Gondola.
