Winton is a dusty, sunbaked outback town in central-western Queensland that wears its history like a well-worn Akubra hat. Known as the birthplace of Qantas and the setting for Banjo Paterson's iconic poem 'Waltzing Matilda', this no-nonsense settlement offers a genuine slice of Australian outback life. The red earth, endless blue skies, and friendly locals create an atmosphere that feels a world away from the coast. Winton is a must-stop for anyone driving the Matilda Way or exploring the Outback Queensland region.
Highlights & What to See
- Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum – A world-class fossil museum set on a mesa, home to the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils. The guided tour and preparation lab are outstanding.
- Waltzing Matilda Centre – A modern museum dedicated to Australia's unofficial national anthem, with immersive exhibits on the poem's history and the shearers' strike.
- Qantas Founders Museum – In nearby Longreach (a short drive), but Winton's own Qantas-related sites include the original hangar and the 'Qantas Corner' with a replica biplane.
- Lark Quarry Dinosaur Trackways – A conservation park featuring the world's only known fossilized dinosaur stampede, with thousands of footprints preserved in stone.
- Bladensburg National Park – A stunning outback park with red sandstone gorges, ancient river red gums, and abundant birdlife. Great for a scenic drive or short walk.
- Winton Opal Fossils – Visit local opal shops where you can see (and buy) opalised fossils, including the famous 'Poppy' the opalised plesiosaur.
