Triabunna is a sleepy coastal town on Tasmania's east coast, serving as the main gateway to Maria Island National Park. With its working fishing port, historic grain silos, and quiet streets, it offers a relaxed base for exploring the region's pristine beaches and wildlife-rich waters.
Highlights & What to See
- Maria Island Ferry – The primary reason to visit; catch the passenger ferry from Triabunna's jetty to Maria Island, a wildlife haven with wombats, kangaroos, and Cape Barren geese, plus convict-era ruins and stunning coastal walks.
- Triabunna Grain Silos – These towering concrete silos, painted with a giant mural of a Tasmanian tiger, are a striking landmark and popular photo stop.
- Spring Bay Mill – A former woodchip mill transformed into an arts and events space; check for exhibitions or simply admire the industrial-chic architecture.
- Triabunna Marina – Watch fishing boats unload their catch, or join a fishing charter for rock lobster and flathead.
- East Coast beaches – Drive a short distance to secluded spots like Rheban Beach or Orford's Shelly Beach for swimming and picnics.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend a full day here to take the Maria Island ferry and explore the national park (allow 4–6 hours on the island). If you're not visiting Maria, a couple of hours is enough to see the silos and marina. Overnight stays are rare, but the town has a handful of B&Bs for those wanting to break up an East Coast road trip.
