Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay are a pair of laid-back coastal villages on Victoria's Bass Coast, where the Tarwin River meets the sea and long sandy beaches stretch into the distance. This is the kind of place where you can spend days beachcombing, fishing, and exploring wild dunes with barely another soul in sight – a perfect low-key escape from Melbourne's pace, just two hours' drive away.
Highlights & What to See
- Venus Bay Beach: A vast, unpatrolled beach ideal for long walks, surf fishing, and watching the sunset. The beach is known for its excellent surf breaks – check local conditions before swimming.
- Tarwin River Estuary: Paddle a kayak or canoe up the river, spotting birdlife and mangroves. The estuary is also a prime spot for catching bream and flathead.
- Bunurong Marine National Park: Just south, this protected area offers rockpooling at low tide, snorkeling over colourful reefs, and the chance to see dolphins and seals offshore.
- Cape Paterson: A nearby coastal village with a safe swimming beach, the famous 'Bunyip' rock formation, and access to the Bunurong Coastal Walk.
- Wonthaggi: A historic coal-mining town with the State Coal Mine – a fascinating underground tour into Victoria's industrial past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Tarwin Lower and Venus Bay are best enjoyed as a relaxed overnight stop or a two-day break. Spend the first day exploring the beach and estuary, then take a half-day to visit Cape Paterson and the Bunurong Marine National Park. If you're combining with Wonthaggi, add another half-day. The area is also a convenient rest point on a longer Great Ocean Road or Wilson Promontory itinerary.
