Thundering through deep gorges and alpine forests, the Snowy River is one of Australia's most iconic waterways, immortalised in Banjo Paterson's poem 'The Man from Snowy River'. This wild river cuts through the heart of the Snowy Mountains region, offering dramatic landscapes, world-class trout fishing, and exhilarating white-water rafting. The river's headwaters rise in the alpine peaks of Kosciuszko National Park, then flow through pristine wilderness before reaching the plains. It's a place where you can truly feel the power of nature, with snow-capped mountains in winter and blooming wildflowers in summer.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Dedicate at least 2–3 days to experience the Snowy River properly. Spend a day in Kosciuszko National Park for hiking and scenic drives, a second day for rafting or fishing, and a third to explore Jindabyne and the Snowy Hydro story. If you're a keen angler or paddler, consider adding an extra day. The best time for rafting is spring (October–November) when snowmelt swells the river; summer is great for hiking and fishing; winter brings skiing nearby.
