Stretching from the southern edge of Sydney's sprawl down to the wilds of the South Coast, the Shoalhaven Coast is a blissful tangle of white-sand beaches, lush national parks, and sleepy river towns. This is where the bush meets the sea in spectacular fashion, offering everything from world-class surfing breaks to tranquil mangrove kayaking. The region feels refreshingly uncrowded compared to its northern neighbours, with a laid-back local culture that revolves around seafood, farmers' markets, and long walks on empty shores.
Highlights & What to See
- Jervis Bay Marine Park – home to some of the whitest sands on earth at Hyams Beach, and crystal-clear waters perfect for spotting dolphins, seals, and migrating whales (June–November).
- Booderee National Park – a stunning Aboriginal-owned park with dramatic sea cliffs, secluded coves, and the historic Cape St George Lighthouse ruins.
- Kangaroo Valley – a bucolic hinterland of rolling green hills, historic bridges, and the enchanting Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park.
- Shoalhaven River – paddle a kayak or stand-up paddleboard through the peaceful mangroves near Nowra, or join a guided oyster tour to taste fresh local produce.
- Seven Mile Beach National Park – a long, undeveloped stretch of sand backed by coastal heath, ideal for birdwatching and solitary walks.
- Berry – a charming historic village with excellent cafés, antique shops, and the famous Berry Donut Van.
Suggested Time to Spend
A minimum of three days allows you to experience both the coast and the hinterland without rushing. Spend your first day exploring Jervis Bay and its beaches, dedicate the second to Booderee National Park and a river activity, and use the third day to venture into Kangaroo Valley or Berry. If you have more time, add a day for bushwalking in Morton National Park or simply lingering at a beachside café.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kiama – famous for its blowhole and pretty seaside charm, about 30 minutes north.
- Batemans Bay – the gateway to the Eurobodalla Coast, with great oyster shacks and the Clyde River.
- Morton National Park – offers spectacular lookouts, waterfalls, and the Pigeon House Mountain walk.
- Ulladulla & Milton – two laid-back coastal towns with a thriving arts scene and excellent surf breaks.
- Canberra – the national capital is a 2.5-hour drive inland, making a nice contrast for a longer road trip.
