Rising dramatically from the coastal lowlands just an hour north of Rio de Janeiro, Serra dos Órgãos State Park is a hiker's paradise of jagged peaks, misty cloud forests, and plunging waterfalls. Named for the organ-pipe-like rock formations that inspired its moniker, this 20,000-hectare park shelters some of Brazil's most accessible Atlantic Rainforest and offers trails that range from gentle waterfall walks to the legendary 'Petrópolis Crossing'—a three-day traverse through the heart of the serra. Whether you're a seasoned mountaineer or a casual nature lover, the park's cool mountain air and breathtaking viewpoints make it an essential inclusion on any Rio region itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Pedra do Sino (Bell Rock): The park's iconic 2,263-metre summit is a classic overnight trek that rewards with sunrise views over the entire Serra and, on clear days, the distant Atlantic. The trail passes through bamboo groves, cloud forest and rocky scrambles—bring a headlamp for the pre-dawn start.
- Véu da Noiva Waterfall: A stunning 40-metre cascade that plunges into a deep pool perfect for a refreshing dip. The short, easy trail from the headquarters makes it a favourite for families and those short on time.
- Petrópolis Crossing (Travessia Petrópolis-Teresópolis): One of Brazil's classic multi-day hikes, this 30-kilometre traverse links the park's two main entrances, crossing high-altitude plateaus and scrambling up the Castelos do Açu. It's best done with a guide and requires good fitness and camping gear.
- Mirante do Soberbo: A spectacular roadside viewpoint just outside the Teresópolis entrance, offering a postcard-perfect panorama of the Dedo de Deus (God's Finger) peak—a 1,683-metre needle of granite that is the symbol of the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves in Teresópolis and dedicate at least a full day to explore the park's highlights: the Véu da Noiva trail and a shorter summit hike like Pedra do Sino can be done in a long day (8–10 hours). For the full Petrópolis Crossing, budget three days and two nights. If you're combining the park with a wider Rio itinerary, two nights in Teresópolis gives you a relaxed pace—one day for a big hike and another for the park's gentler trails and the charming mountain town itself.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Petrópolis: The imperial city 30 minutes west, with its summer palace of Dom Pedro II, Gothic cathedral and excellent German-Brazilian cuisine.
- Teresópolis: The park's gateway town, offering cosy pousadas, artisan markets and the Granja Comary (Brazil's national football team training ground).
- Serra da Estrela: A scenic mountain range to the north, with further hiking and the quaint town of Nova Friburgo.
- Rio de Janeiro: Just 90 minutes south, the Marvelous City is the obvious start or end point, with its beaches, Sugarloaf and Christ the Redeemer.
