Rising dramatically from the coast north of Rio de Janeiro, Serra dos Órgãos is a rugged mountain range named for its organ-pipe-like peaks. This UNESCO-recognized paradise is a haven for hikers and nature lovers, offering lush Atlantic Forest trails, cascading waterfalls, and sweeping views from its serrated ridges. The cool mountain air and rich biodiversity make it a refreshing escape from the city heat, with a well-developed national park at its heart.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

For a taste of the region, allow at least two full days: one to explore Petrópolis and its imperial history, and another for a solid hike in the national park (such as the Pedra do Sino or a shorter waterfall circuit). If you're a keen trekker, add two more days for the classic crossing between Petrópolis and Teresópolis. The cooler months (April–September) offer the clearest skies and most comfortable hiking conditions.
