Nestled on the western coast of New Caledonia's main island, Grande Terre, Poya is a tranquil gateway to both mountain and sea. This small town straddles the boundary between the Northern and Southern Provinces, offering a genuine slice of Kanak culture and unspoiled landscapes. With its mix of red earth, pine forests, and turquoise lagoons, Poya rewards travellers who venture off the beaten track with authentic encounters and raw natural beauty.
Highlights & What to See
- Nekoro Beach: A stunning white-sand beach fringed by casuarinas, perfect for swimming and picnicking with views of the lagoon.
- Pindai Caves: Explore limestone caves that hold ancient petroglyphs and provide a cool escape from the tropical heat.
- Koniambo Massif: This iconic red mountain dominates the landscape; hiking trails offer panoramic views across the coastline and nickel-mining country.
- Poya Market: Visit on Saturday mornings for local produce, handmade crafts, and the chance to chat with Kanak artisans.
- Baie des Tortues (Turtle Bay): A serene cove where green sea turtles often feed in the clear shallows – bring a snorkel.
Suggested Time to Spend
Poya is best enjoyed as a relaxed stopover of one to two days. Spend the first morning exploring the Pindai Caves and the market, then head to Nekoro Beach for the afternoon. On a second day, take a guided walk on the Koniambo Massif or kayak along the coast. The town itself is compact, so you can easily combine it with a longer itinerary along the west coast of Grande Terre.
