Omarama is a tiny, sun-baked settlement in the Mackenzie Basin of New Zealand’s South Island, famous among glider pilots for its exceptional thermals. For the road-tripper, it’s a welcome break on the journey between Christchurch and Queenstown, offering serene views of the braided Ahuriri River and the distant Southern Alps. The name means ‘place of light’ – and you’ll feel it in the vast, open skies that make this a haven for star-gazing, cycling, and fly-fishing.
Highlights & What to See
- Gliding & Scenic Flights: Omarama is one of the world’s best places for gliding; even if you don’t fly, watch the silent sailplanes circle above. Book a tandem flight for a bird’s-eye view of the Mackenzie Basin.
- Ahuriri River & Conservation Park: Walk along the braided riverbed, spot black stilt and wrybill, or try your hand at fly-fishing for brown trout. The park offers easy tramping tracks through tussock and matagouri scrub.
- Clay Cliffs: A short drive north of Omarama, these dramatic, hoodoo-like pinnacles of silt and gravel are a photographer’s dream. The unsealed road leads to a short walk among the bizarre formations.
- Omarama Hot Tubs: Soak in wood-fired hot tubs overlooking the river and mountains – a perfect end to a day of driving or hiking. Each tub is private and heated with local beech wood.
- Dark Sky Reserve: As part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, Omarama offers incredible stargazing. On a clear night, the Milky Way is a brilliant ribbon overhead.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers pass through in a day – stopping for a coffee, a stroll along the river, and a quick look at the glider runway. But to truly appreciate the area, stay one night: arrive in the late afternoon, soak in the hot tubs, watch the sunset, and stargaze. If you’re into gliding or fishing, plan for two days.
