Perched on the lush green slopes of the Domain in Parramatta, Old Government House is Australia’s oldest surviving public building and a UNESCO World Heritage–listed gem. Built between 1799 and 1818, this elegant Georgian mansion served as the country residence of the early colonial governors, and its interiors have been meticulously restored to reflect the era of Governor Lachlan Macquarie. Stepping inside feels like time travel: the scent of beeswax, the creak of floorboards, and the quiet dignity of rooms filled with period furniture and personal artefacts. The surrounding parkland, with its sweeping lawns and ancient trees, adds to the sense of stepping into early Sydney’s pastoral past.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Set aside at least 1.5 to 2 hours for a guided tour of the house and a wander through the gardens. If you plan to explore the Domain and combine with other Parramatta sights (like the Parramatta Female Factory or Experiment Farm Cottage), allow a half-day. The site is compact, so you can easily fit it into a morning or afternoon before heading to a riverside lunch.
