Imagine swimming alongside ancient sea turtles in one of the world’s most pristine marine environments. The New Caledonia Turtle Sanctuary (Sanctuaire des Tortues Marines) is a vast protected area spanning over 1.3 million square kilometres of lagoon and ocean, dedicated to the conservation of five of the world’s seven sea turtle species. Here, the turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs are a living museum of marine life. Whether you’re a snorkeller, diver, or nature enthusiast, this sanctuary offers an unforgettable encounter with these gentle giants in a setting that feels gloriously untouched.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves in Nouméa and dedicate at least two to three days to the sanctuary. A full day allows for a morning snorkel trip to Îlot Maître and an afternoon at the aquarium. With two days, add a dive or a longer boat excursion to the outer reefs or the remote Île des Pins, where turtles are abundant year-round. If you’re a serious diver, plan for five to seven days to reach the Chesterfield Islands – a liveaboard trip is essential, and the journey itself is an adventure.
