Perched high in the cool, misty mountains of northern Bali, Munduk is a serene escape from the coast's heat and crowds. This tiny village is the heart of Bali's coffee country, surrounded by lush clove, cocoa, and vanilla plantations, and punctuated by plunging waterfalls. The air is fresh, the pace slow, and the views across the verdant hills to the distant sea simply breathtaking. It's a place for hikers, foodies, and anyone craving authentic village life.
Highlights & What to See
- Munduk Waterfall – A dramatic 15-metre cascade plunging into a deep, cool pool; a short, steep walk through clove and coffee groves leads you there.
- Tamblingan Lake & Buyan Lake – Twin caldera lakes hidden in ancient forest. Hire a local guide for a trek through the mossy woods to the lakeside or rent a canoe for a peaceful paddle.
- Bali Botanic Garden – Located at Bedugul, a short drive away, this sprawling garden showcases Bali's incredible flora, with orchids, medicinal plants, and a cool, misty atmosphere.
- Munduk Moding Plantation & Café – A working coffee and cacao plantation where you can sample some of the island's best organic coffee, chocolate, and vanilla, all overlooking the hills.
- Village Walks & Rice Terraces – Wander through the patchwork of rice paddies, clove groves, and small villages. The gentle trails offer stunning views and encounters with local farmers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three nights allow you to settle into the mountain rhythm. Spend your first day hiking to the waterfall and exploring the plantation. Dedicate a full day to the lakes and botanic garden, perhaps with a picnic. A third morning offers time for a village walk or just sipping coffee with a view. Munduk works well as a two-night stop en route between Ubud and Lovina or Pemuteran.
