Perched dramatically on the edge of a granite cliff at 1,400 metres, Mount Buffalo Chalet is Australia’s finest alpine lodge – a grand 1910s survivor that feels like a Scottish baronial mansion dropped into the High Country. Its wraparound verandahs offer dizzying views over the Ovens Valley, while inside, the original wood panelling, open fireplaces and nostalgic dining room evoke a bygone era of genteel mountain holidays. Today it’s part of Mount Buffalo National Park, a protected wonderland of snow gums, granite tors and wildflowers.
Highlights & What to See
- The Chalet itself – even if you’re not staying, wander the public rooms, admire the heritage architecture and soak up the views from the verandah.
- Mount Buffalo Summit walk – a moderate 2-km trail from the chalet leads to the summit trig point, with 360° panoramas across the Victorian Alps.
- The Horn – a striking granite outcrop a short drive from the chalet; scramble up for one of the park’s most iconic views.
- Eurobin Falls – a series of cascades reached via a short walk through manna gums and fern gullies, especially impressive after rain.
- Lake Catani – a pretty man-made lake below the chalet, perfect for a picnic or a paddle in summer (no motorboats).
- Cross-country skiing & snowshoeing – in winter, the plateau transforms into a serene snowfield with groomed trails right from the chalet door.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves at the chalet for two to three nights to fully explore the park. A single day trip from Bright or Beechworth is possible but rushed – you’ll want at least half a day to hike to The Horn and the summit, plus time to linger at the chalet. If you’re self-driving the Great Alpine Road, break your journey here for a night; the sunset and sunrise from the verandah are unforgettable.
