Mount Buffalo Chalet

Perched dramatically on the edge of a granite cliff at 1,400 metres, Mount Buffalo Chalet is Australia’s finest alpine lodge – a grand 1910s survivor that feels like a Scottish baronial mansion dropped into the High Country. Its wraparound verandahs offer dizzying views over the Ovens Valley, while inside, the original wood panelling, open fireplaces and nostalgic dining room evoke a bygone era of genteel mountain holidays. Today it’s part of Mount Buffalo National Park, a protected wonderland of snow gums, granite tors and wildflowers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves at the chalet for two to three nights to fully explore the park. A single day trip from Bright or Beechworth is possible but rushed – you’ll want at least half a day to hike to The Horn and the summit, plus time to linger at the chalet. If you’re self-driving the Great Alpine Road, break your journey here for a night; the sunset and sunrise from the verandah are unforgettable.
