Moonie, a tiny outback settlement in southern Queensland, is the birthplace of Australia's first commercial oil field. For travellers venturing along the Carnarvon Highway, it offers a fascinating slice of petroleum history and a genuine glimpse of rural life on the Darling Downs. The landscape is classic Australian bush – flat, sun-scorched, and dotted with ironbark and cypress pine – with a palpable sense of frontier endurance.
Highlights & What to See
- Moonie Oil Field: Visit the historic site where oil was first struck in 1961. Interpretive signs explain the drilling and the boom that briefly turned this sleepy stop into a bustling camp. The original pumpjack still stands as an icon.
- Moonie Memorial Park: A shady spot with a striking monument commemorating the oil pioneers, plus a picnic area and a vintage fire engine on display.
- Outback Pub: The Moonie Hotel is the social heart of town – pull up a stool for a cold beer and a yarn with locals. The counter meals are hearty and unpretentious.
- Stargazing: With virtually no light pollution, the night sky here is spectacular. Bring a blanket and lie back to watch the Milky Way stretch from horizon to horizon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Moonie is a quick stop rather than a destination. Allow 30–45 minutes to explore the memorial park and oil field, plus an hour if you fancy a drink or a meal at the pub. Most travellers pass through on a longer drive between St George and Goondiwindi, so plan a short break to stretch your legs and soak up the history.
