Meningie

Meningie is a quiet, unassuming town on the shores of Lake Albert, part of the Coorong lagoon system. It's a classic South Australian stopover with a big sky, birdlife in abundance, and a palpable sense of isolation. The town itself is small, but its setting – where the lake meets the Murray River estuary – is the real draw. For travellers on the Princes Highway between Adelaide and Mount Gambier, Meningie offers a genuine taste of the Coorong's wild beauty without the crowds.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Meningie is best as a half-day stop en route to or from the Limestone Coast. Arrive by late morning, stretch your legs with a walk along the lakefront, visit the cheese museum, and grab a bite at one of the local cafés. If you can, book a two-hour Coorong cruise – it's the highlight and will add another couple of hours. Overnighting is not essential unless you're a keen birdwatcher or want a slow, quiet evening.
