Mclean Falls
Plunging 22 metres into a deep, fern-fringed gorge, Mclean Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Catlins region of New Zealand's South Island. The walk to the falls winds through lush native forest alive with birdsong, and the final viewpoint offers a misty, powerful cascade that feels utterly wild and untouched. It's a must-do for nature lovers and road-trippers exploring the rugged southern coastline.
Highlights & What to See
- The main cascade – A two-tiered waterfall that drops into a clear pool, surrounded by dense mossy rocks and tree ferns. The spray creates rainbows on sunny days.
- The walking track – A 40-minute return stroll through podocarp forest, with boardwalks and bridges crossing the Tautuku River. Keep an eye out for native birds like the tūī and bellbird.
- Upper viewpoint – A short side track leads to a higher vantage point, offering a different perspective of the falls and the gorge.
- Interpretive signs – Along the trail, learn about the forest ecology and the historic significance of the area to Māori and early European settlers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the return walk and time to soak in the scenery. The track is easy and well-maintained, suitable for most fitness levels. Combine with a visit to other Catlins attractions like the Cathedral Caves or Nugget Point for a full day of exploring.
