Koondrook Perricoota State Forests
Straddling the Murray River near the Victorian border, Koondrook Perricoota State Forests are a sprawling floodplain wilderness of towering river red gums, billabongs, and wetlands. This is one of the largest remaining river red gum forests in Australia, offering a raw, immersive nature experience far from the crowds. The forests are a haven for birdwatchers, kayakers, and campers seeking solitude under a cathedral of ancient trees.
Highlights & What to See
- River Red Gum Cathedrals: Walk or cycle among centuries-old red gums, some with gnarled trunks over 5 metres in circumference. The forest floor is carpeted with fallen leaves and the air is filled with bird calls.
- Murray River Paddle: Kayak or canoe along the Murray's quiet backwaters and lagoons. The still water reflects the towering gums, and you might spot kangaroos drinking at the water's edge.
- Birdwatching Bonanza: Over 200 bird species have been recorded, including majestic wedge-tailed eagles, colourful parrots, and the iconic superb parrot. Bring binoculars for the best sightings.
- Koondrook–Perricoota Forest Drive: A scenic 30 km self-drive loop (mostly unsealed) that winds through the forest, with interpretive signs explaining the ecology and history of the area.
- Camping Under the Stars: Basic bush campsites along the Murray offer a true off-grid experience. Fall asleep to the sound of frogs and the rustle of leaves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to explore the forests properly. A half-day is enough for a quick drive and short walk, but to truly appreciate the serenity, overnight camping is recommended. If you're paddling, allow two days to explore the waterways and camp on a sandbar. The best times are spring and autumn when temperatures are mild.
