Katoomba is the vibrant heart of the Blue Mountains, a town that balances dramatic natural wonders with a thriving café culture and a bohemian, artsy vibe. Perched on a sandstone ridge at over 1,000 metres, it offers breathtaking views, epic bushwalks, and a cool, misty climate that makes a cosy pub or a flat white all the more welcome. For international travellers, Katoomba is the perfect base for exploring the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, with the iconic Three Sisters right on its doorstep.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters & Echo Point Lookout – The postcard-perfect view of the Three Sisters sandstone formation from Echo Point is a must. Arrive early or late in the day to avoid crowds and catch the changing light.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world, the Scenic Railway, or glide over the forest canopy on the Scenic Skyway and Cableway. The boardwalks at the bottom offer a lush rainforest walk.
- Giant Stairway & The Three Sisters Walk – Descend the famous Giant Stairway for an up-close encounter with the Three Sisters and a challenging but rewarding hike through the valley.
- Katoomba Falls – A short walk from the town centre leads to a series of cascades and lookouts; the night-lit version is especially magical.
- Katoomba Street & The Carrington Hotel – The main street is lined with antique shops, galleries, and excellent cafés. The grand Carrington Hotel, a relic of the Victorian era, is worth a peek inside for a drink.
- Leura Cascades & Gordon Falls – Just a short drive away in the neighbouring village of Leura, these gentle waterfalls and picnic spots offer a quieter alternative.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find two full days in Katoomba ideal. Day one can cover the main lookouts and Scenic World; day two allows for a longer bushwalk, such as the National Pass loop, and time to explore the cafés and galleries. If you're short on time, a day trip from Sydney is possible but feels rushed — plan to stay overnight to experience the Blue Mountains at dawn and dusk, when the mist rolls in and the crowds thin out.
