Kaikoura Whale Watch

Kaikoura, on the rugged east coast of New Zealand's South Island, is one of the world's premier whale-watching destinations. The deep Kaikoura Canyon, just offshore, funnels nutrient-rich currents that sustain an extraordinary abundance of marine life. Here, sperm whales are year-round residents, and encounters with dusky dolphins, fur seals, and migrating humpback whales are common. The town itself is a laid-back coastal settlement, with excellent seafood, especially crayfish (kaikoura is Māori for 'meal of crayfish').

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves in Kaikoura for two nights, allowing a full day for the whale-watch tour (morning trips are best for calm seas) and an afternoon to explore the peninsula walk and seal colony. If you're short on time, a single night is enough to catch a whale-watch tour and a quick seafood dinner, but you'll miss the coastal walks and dolphin swims.
