Just a short ferry ride from Cannes, Île Saint-Honorat is a serene escape into history and nature. This tiny island, one of the Lérins Islands, is home to a working Cistercian monastery and a handful of monks who produce wine, honey, and liqueur. With no cars and few crowds, it feels like a world apart—a place where pine-scented air mingles with the sound of waves and the distant chime of monastery bells.
Highlights & What to See
- Monastère de Lérins – A fortified 11th-century monastery with a cloister, chapel, and tranquil gardens. The monks still live and pray here; visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and join the daily mass.
- Wine and Liqueur Tasting – The monks cultivate vineyards and produce a range of wines, as well as a famous eau-de-vie. The shop near the ferry dock offers samples and sales.
- Coastal Walk and Beaches – A 4km trail circles the island, passing secluded coves, rocky cliffs, and a ruined medieval tower. Stop for a swim at the small sandy beach near the monastery.
- Chapelle Saint-Sauveur – A 12th-century chapel perched on the island’s highest point, offering panoramic views of Cannes and the Esterel Massif.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: arrive on the morning ferry, explore the monastery and shop, then hike the coastal trail and enjoy a picnic lunch (bring your own—there’s no restaurant). The last ferry back to Cannes is usually late afternoon, so you can easily combine this with a morning in Cannes. For a more contemplative pace, consider staying overnight at the monastery’s guesthouse (book well in advance).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Cannes – The glamorous port city is the gateway to the island; explore La Croisette, the old town (Le Suquet), and the Marché Forville.
- Île Sainte-Marguerite – The larger sister island, famous for the Fort Royal prison where the Man in the Iron Mask was held. Ferries stop here en route to Saint-Honorat.
- Antibes – A short drive east, with the Picasso Museum, bustling Marché Provençal, and the Cap d’Antibes coastal walk.
- Grasse – The perfume capital of the world, 20 minutes inland, with factory tours and the Musée International de la Parfumerie.
