Hyden is a tiny wheatbelt town in Western Australia's remote interior, best known as the gateway to Wave Rock – a 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long natural rock formation that resembles a giant frozen ocean wave. This surreal landscape, combined with the town's pioneering history and vast starry skies, makes Hyden an unforgettable detour for road-trippers exploring the Golden Outback. The journey here is as memorable as the destination, with endless horizons and wildflowers in spring.
Highlights & What to See
- Wave Rock: The star attraction – a 2.7-billion-year-old granite cliff shaped like a breaking wave. Walk along its base, snap photos from the viewing platform, and climb to the top for sweeping views over the saltbush plains.
- Hippo's Yawn: A massive cave-like rock formation near Wave Rock that resembles a yawning hippo. It's an easy walk and a fun photo spot.
- The Humps: A granite outcrop with a fascinating history – it's home to a gnamma hole (natural rock well) and the site of a 1930s gold rush. A short, steep walk leads to panoramic views.
- Mulka's Cave: A small cave adorned with ancient Aboriginal hand stencils, believed to be the work of the legendary giant Mulka. A short interpretive trail explains the site's cultural significance.
- Wildflower Viewing: During spring (August–October), the surrounding bushland erupts with colourful wildflowers – look for everlastings, orchids, and wattles.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors see Hyden as a day trip from Perth (a 3.5-hour drive) or as a stop on a longer loop. To experience Wave Rock and the other rock formations without rushing, allow at least 3–4 hours. If you want to hike the trails, explore the small town museum, or stay for sunset and stargazing, plan an overnight stay – accommodation includes a caravan park and a few motels.
